lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006Well, speaking of, cold witchy titties, let's get into romance 1 0 1 and talk about some of our favorite tropes in which romances, which ones cast a spell on you? I had to go there.
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005I wanna start this off by saying. I can always get down on a witchy supernatural romance.

lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005I can go bobbing for apples in that cauldron.

lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005I think maybe it's because I grew up un charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but there's something so wholesome and just nice about reading, a witch Romance. And you can do it so many different ways, right from the hidden magical abilities, which like come out like, oh, I didn't know I was a witch. Now I have powers. How am I gonna navigate this paranormal world that I didn't know anything about? You know, the, character, their magical heritage is revealed. and then of course they encounter their romantasy love interest, either, through that revelation, kind of like you had with, uh, well, it wasn't a witch, but the Cassandra CLA series with the shadow hunters, you know, kind of that vibe. or, it's a secret that they have to keep from their person. and then they drag them into the life. But usually that's a character that doesn't last long, and then they find their real person.

lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006I do think you get elements of like the hidden world, either, like you said, they're discovering their magical abilities and one of the characters is introducing the other to the world, or they're both part of this hidden world and they're navigating it somehow. I feel like that's another way And then I feel like you also get like they're introducing a human. So sometimes you can have either a witch human pairing or even a warlock human pairing, like one that I read recently, go Hex Yourself by Jessica Claire. She was a human who inadvertently signed up to Be a witch, is familiar, but didn't believe in magic. And her love interest ended up being a warlock and part of it was convincing her the magic was real. And that was interesting. I liked that.
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005I like that too. I mean, I feel like, we grew up in this element of the mystical and the magical, especially reading it. I mean, come on, Harry Potter, who didn't grow up in our generation reading that, wishing they got their Hogwarts letter. And to that point, the witches, wizards, warlock, naming convention, I think is pretty funny of like, you go into a book and you don't know who's gonna be called what. and sometimes they're different. Sometimes like a warlock is, the bad guy. Sometimes a warlock is the male version of a witch. Sometimes they're all witches. you never know. Those, terms are, very free flowing, especially in this genre of what they mean.
kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006I do think it's interesting that Warlock in my mind, tends to be associated with villains, not with the good guy, but I've definitely seen it where they're like, oh, I'm a warlock and I'm good, or whatever. But then I just, I just think of charmed and how all the warlocks were bad.
lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006Yes, yes. Well, and this is probably not true for all of them, but just happens to be the ones that I've read. I do feel like if you were kind of getting into that, like more cozy rom-com style, witchy romance, that's where I tend to see the witch warlock, which is just delineates between, a female and male versus some of those more, I wanna say like Romantasy esque or, they're really building big fantasy worlds. Maybe they aren't set in our world. Maybe it isn't like strictly like a paranormal romance, where you have some of those darker. Elements and the warlocks are referenced as like the dark. I mean, and it can happen in paranormal too, but I, definitely see it more often in the rom-coms where there really isn't true evil. They're just like trying to overcome an obstacle, you know?
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005Yeah. Or maybe the black magic is the evil, right? That darker side of witchcraft. and to that point too. I feel like if you have like a bigger coven, you have the more common witch is like gender neutral. So you have a bunch of witches in a coven. if they're like male and female or whatever, gender in that cove, they're all witches. but you also have very much like, in the past, I love the witch, storyline because you can go historical with it. I mean, predominantly women, we're seen as witches. so you have a lot of historical romances set, during the witch trials.
lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006I think when you get those larger covens, you also have this lame witch, or the witch disappointment. this sets up like a really good romantasy comedy esque. Feel to it where it's usually the, female main character who is a disappointment. She comes from like a super powerful or prominent family, but she's got wonky powers or she can't control her powers or she's always blowing stuff up. And the made male character kind of comes in, whether he's a warlock or a witch or some other creature. I read one, Sarah Hawley's, witch is guide to Fake Dating a demon where she is truly that lame witch fail trope and accidentally summons a demon and has to pretend she's dating him and he helps her, like he sees her true power, and sees her for who she truly is. It just sets a, like a really nice romantasy art for the main male character really believing in. The female main character, despite her wonky powers, I think it's cool.
kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006And then of course you have enemies to lovers. That's popular in Magical Romance because you have the light and the dark, and man, do they get dark and it's great. But you know, as they say, they might not be enemies forever, but it is forbidden love. You know, we got the Romeo Juliet situation going on with light magic and dark magic. And sometimes, or yeah, warring covens are a really big one. where maybe they have different rules that they abide by and one coven doesn't like what the other covens doing, so on and so forth. Or you, maybe they have different elements that they control and I think very avatar esque, you know, but there was one book I read, I can't remember the name of it, where it was, which Covens, and they all controlled a different element depending on the coven you were in. And it was a pyramid of power and

kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006an MLM of power and depending on what power you had, depend on where you were in this pyramid. Right. and it was really cool 'cause then you had the main, female character was at the bottom of the pyramid. she controlled Earth or something. So she was with the witches who did like planting and like growing flowers.
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005was fire on top. Fires
kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006was fire. Yeah. It's because it's like a really powerful element. Okay.
lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006the witches wanna burn my world down.
kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006Yeah. And so you had like these opposing factions of like creating life versus literally burning things down. And, it was just like, oh, okay, these two coming in this Romeo Juliet situation of like two opposing factions
lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006that kind of reminds me of, the coven by Harper l. Woods with those different like elemental,
kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006I haven't read The Coven, which I really want to, 'cause I love Harper Ellwood and I really need to read it. But I, I just have so many books. I promised myself I would only read one book at a time. Now I'm not allowed to start a new one until I finish the last one.

lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006I liked it. it did not compare to her. what lies beyond the veil. it was still good, it's darker. I just personally loved her other series better, but you kind of have that similar element of, different types of witches. but there is this like death magic, necromancy in there that it's pretty cool. it is very student hot for teacher kind of thing, a little bit, but dark academia, you'll have to read it.
kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006I'll read it, but, we'll see. I'm not a huge fan of academia romances, but
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005So Casey, you, brought up this element of dark and light and we touched on this in like the series opener of what's great about the paranormal romance subgenre is that you have like different species. Sometimes you'll have like just a witch book, just covens battling each other, just only witches. But, I feel like more often than not you have, the element of demons or vampires or ghosts or other paranormal creatures that come in. And you could have the cross species love, that, you know, may be forbidden, right? or that they're the enemy. The demons are the enemy, right? but you also have the dark and light magic element too. which There's this dichotomy between dark and light magic, whether it's, a witch, falling into black magic and it being like a struggle or something she has to pull herself back from. Or, a hero might be involved with like the darker powers that are seen as bad, but are maybe misunderstood. I got this a lot when I read, the Last Witch by MJ Laurie and, which is a great series. I made it through volume two and I still have to read volume three, but you also sometimes have this, the powers are too great and it's the witch battling like these uncontrollable powers and it's other people thinking, oh, she's too powerful. we must stop her. Or it's this, you know, her powers are dark, or her powers are bad, or her powers are, seen as evil somehow. And that storyline of like, her having to prove that one to herself, that she can handle the, powers within her, but two, that she can do good with it. which I've seen. a big theme in a lot of, books as well.
lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006It's the, ultimate just abolishing the patriarchy that we wish.
kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006it's, I literally was going to mention we should really mention feminism in which romance is, 'cause it is, So prominent in the fact that. Typically. Typically I feel like in which romance books women have all the power, and even in our book club pick for today, it's all about how her ancestor was this insanely powerful witch who got her power stolen from her,

kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006men, can we just say
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005Well, and going back to that historically too, it's, the witch trials, it's the persecution of, females and the burning of witches at the stake. I mean, that's a big theme in these books too. And
lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006So they didn't burn witches, they burned women
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005they burned
kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006right. they burned women that they didn't like what they were saying or doing, or they couldn't have
lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006or that we're trying to grab for power because that's what we, freaking deserve.
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005Yeah. And you know, I think these books in particular written about, witches and about kind of taking back that power and, writing a strong female character that rises above and gives a big old fuck you, is a way I think for a lot of women today, especially those writers to use it as a mode to just take that power back, and to that and yeah, and making it a romance, doubling the empowerment of women because, you know, we're writing about, for the most part female pleasure or prioritizing that. and so that's, why these books always hit for me because you get those elements that made me just go, Yes, yes.
lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006She's taking her power, she's taking her pleasure, and she is like, there is a man involved, but she's not dependent on him. She gets to have him. She chooses to have him. And I feel like it's important that our romance is like, you can be strong and independent and capable and still want a man, you know, or a partner. And whenever I am just raging against the world and what our society is coming to, I will curl up with a witchy romance and it will make me feel better always.

lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005And an example to that point, women of Blood and Bone by Annie Anderson. I read that last month. Phenomenal. I want more out of it. And I know there's, a sequel already written or being written, but. the synopsis starts out as like, I was burned at the stake, in this time. And she basically, she reincarnates she doesn't die and she has been persecuted as a witch several times and

And it was about, you know, she, a lot of the times, the reasons she was either found out about being witch is 'cause she was helping others and she got screwed in the end. And this book is about finding that balance between protecting yourself while also still being able to provide, and protect the ones you love. And I think that is such a, huge, important theme, especially to women and even to mothers too, about, and Lindsay, you could probably speak more to this about, giving your all to your family without losing yourself and in this romance, she would give her all to, help strangers or to help her friends and she'd end up dying in the end. and then being reincarnated, which is a very big extreme. But, I found it a very refreshing, book that I read recently that kind of, overarching analysis of, the struggle

lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006I do feel a little bit like death after staying up all night with my children. and like the coffee is reincarnating me, but I also am full of love that I get to have these cute little gremlins. but yeah, it kind of touches on that overarching thing of community and a sense of belonging, either within the community that they're a part of or discovering a new community, like the hidden magical world or their found family. I mean, people are gonna be like, stop talking about found family. We're

lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006it is because you get to choose your family. You get to choose who you're with it. really is. Part of it is that choice, you know? and it's almost like. You're choosing sometimes to overcome like certain traditions, you know, step outside of certain traditions or rely on them. There's that theme of tradition is also super common. within the covens, you know, you OIT and have just things that are passed down and the band characters are trying to like modernize or step outside of that shadow of this, like weight of this coven or family, this is how it's been done for centuries. And they're like, well, I don't wanna do it this way. so they kind of either find a new community or shirk tradition and figure it out on their own with their new partners.

lindsey_1_03-05-2025_153006Lauren, well, we've kept everyone in so much suspense about book club. Let's jump into plot and pacing. wants to go first? Lauren?
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005I thought the plot moved along quite nicely. I thought it was like a little bit rushed in the ending, kind of like working to sum up everything a little bit quickly where they spent most of the book working to like break this curse. and then like, okay. They broke it. Yeah. Um, I feel like what I'm normally used to is like, let's say you have a fantasy romance, right? And you spend a big portion of the time building up to this big battle.

kacy_1_03-05-2025_153006Yeah.
lauren_1_03-05-2025_153005and that's what I was expecting, like this kind of big thing. And it was, it just happened so, so quickly. So that's kind of like my only one little hangup I would say about the pacing part of it. but I really enjoyed the plot and the second chance aspect, the accidental curse. I really enjoyed the magic system in the town and kind of how the college worked. and Graves Glen. Seemed like such a cute little magical town during Halloween too. I love that. it's like if Stars Hollow from Grill, more girls was like mixed with Halloween Town. and I just got to skip through it with my pumpkin spice latte and wearing my little witchy garb. it sounded like a place I'd wanna hang out for sure. minus

I wasn't really expecting to like the book because I was in a weird place in my mood reading journey when I decided to read this book. And I remember telling Lindsay, I don't know if I can read it because it's not what I'm wanting to read right now at all, because Lindsay had already told me that there's like. Barely any spice in it. And I was really wanting a spicy book, not, not, a Hallmark, cute book, but it ended up being really, really cute. And the first chapter is fricking hilarious when she curses Reese. but I do agree, I think the climax of the book was so fast. Like the fact that she gets her cousin and her aunt to go to the grave of her ancestor. 'cause they found out that her ancestors' power is the one that powers the lay lines, which makes sense that, she's weirdly connected to these lay lines, right? 'cause they're her family's power. But then they raise her ancestor from the grave and she. Is like suddenly convinced not to kill Reese and then she's like, nevermind. You're good. Have fun, and then everything's fixed.

Totally not the vibe for the witchy. Romcoms, it is very common to have everything just all of a sudden come together at the end, and then it's like, boom, HEA, it wraps up. There isn't a lot of, diving in and discourse in the actual craziness they're fighting. and most of it is exploring, like their relationship as they're trying to solve something or overcome some sort of hurdle.

Like there is something happening between the main couple that causes some sort of tension or something and then it wraps up very quickly which is kind of nice. And then they come back together and things are good and it's kind of those feel good, kind of know what you're getting into with it. And it's great for somebody who, their escapism, I equate it to like, my husband likes to watch like the dramas and the thrillers and TV show wise. And I'm like, when I relax, at the end of the day, I'm putting on friends, I'm putting on something where I know I'm not gonna be just emotionally destroyed because I am a little bit of like a mood reader, mood watcher of things. And I don't wanna deal with the pain of other people, whether it's in real life or on the screen or on the page. Sometimes I just need that happy, nice romance that's gonna leave me feeling good and it's not gonna take me on a rollercoaster of emotions and. I really felt that here, in this book. Like there was some tension, there was some kind of high stake stuff, but I was never like, oh my gosh, I need to put my book in the freezer. Um, that's a

The scenes were there together and they're, lobbing, minor insults sometimes back and forth or, just kind of ribbing each other, which I thought was pretty funny. and you know, even though they only spent like one summer together nine years ago, which they denied the depths of their feelings, um, in the beginning as they came back together and experienced the undeniable chemistry that they had, it felt like a natural progression for them to kind of pick up where they left off and just kind of grow in their love for one another. I know sometimes when you get a second chance, they're like, they have to get to know each other again, and sometimes it's awkward but. it was written very well. and I could just see the, plausibility of their connection and how it transformed and grew, during their second chance.

It honestly was, I felt like a very truly written scene of how people are when they're drunk and upset with an ex. Like, and they're just chatting with the friend and they're just like, I don't want his hair to fall that way anymore. I hope he can't find the clit anymore. Like, you know, like things like that. I, I thought that was so funny and I was like, oh, this is humor. I really, I feel this. I very relatable, but Basically this whole book would've not been a book if they had just had a simple conversation, in the beginning, which I do understand that, you know, sometimes a miscommunication needs to happen in order for a story to be written. I do understand that miscommunication is like the number one way to get a specifically very much a romance book off on a running start, right? because literally their miscommunication came from the fact they had just had sex with each other and they had been together for three months and he mentions, oh wait, I'm engaged. I need to go back to Wales to end it. And she took that as, holy shit, you are engaged and you never told me, and now I feel like the other woman and you need to go back to Wales to finish your engagement. Instead of, oh, he needs to go back to Wales to end the engagement that he never wanted. 'cause it was an arranged marriage by his dad. Right. Simple conversation. But do understand why, and this is where I'm getting to. I do understand that in the heat of the moment, hearing that as a woman would be devastating. Right. Absolutely devastating. But she doesn't give him a chance to explain, like at all. Which again, I understand. If I was in her shoes, would I have given him a chance to explain? Probably not. I'm an emotional person. I'd be like, get the fuck out Reese. You know, but I did wanna bring up the fact that this miscommunication was so small. He did say he was going back to Wales to. Basically get rid of the engagement because of her. And she was like, no, no, no, just fucking stay in Wales bitch. Like that's, you know. But overall, I do think the connection was really good. I thought their banter was absolutely hilarious. And Reese was so sweet to her at times, and I was like, oh yeah, this is like that cozy comfort love that you get in these comfy witchy books, which is really nice. And I love second chances. So you have a lot of that tension and buildup where it's more explicit. Like, I'm not saying it's a spicy book, but these spice that is there, like when they're in the library and that sort of thing, like the really detailing and those scenes and they're more open door and then it's like they finally get to it and they have sex and then most of the rest it's just reference. They're like, oh, they had some more sex. Or it's all like off page, it's closed door. And I thought that was really interesting. I had not personally read one like that. I find that most of the time you have a lot of like, okay, okay, we're building up, we're building up, we're building up. And then it's like you get the eat her pussy scene and then you get like mutual masturbation and then you get, you know, and then you have the sex and then it continues until the end of the book. This was different. And it just referenced this, I just thought it was really interesting. I don't know what you guys thought about that.

It's a goodie two shoes, comfort cozy read. Right. And I honestly wasn't expecting the amount of spice that was in it because Lindsay, you told me, you were like, it's not very spicy at all. And then I like got to the spicy scenes and I was like, whoa, the tension. It's there. they have tension, for the fact that Reese, I really enjoyed the very sweet, sensual side of Reese. He, did a lot of cute things like he would kiss vi's palm, which I thought was like so romantasy. but I also really loved when he said, Vivian, if you'll allow me to make you come tonight, I'll consider myself the most fortunate of men. And I was like, fuck yes. And then it, but like at the same time, they don't really go quite in depth in it. It does describe some things, but it's pretty minimal. it made me happy to the point that I've been exposed to so much spice that I'm okay with a minimally spicy book. And it got me blushing, which was nice. I was like, oh, okay. This was actually really nice. It kind of reminded me of once burned where like, there's spice but it's not the main focus of the story. And some readers, they stick to one area but for me, I love that minimal spice, intimate, like cute, very. I would say like subtle, flirting, just as much as I love the spicier stuff, if it's written well, and if it, it works to build the tension to build that, that romantasy intimate element between the characters. I love that.

I pre-order the fourth one, I pre-ordered it right away and it, it came out a year later. And then I got to the point where I'm like, oh, I, I wanna reread all of them. So that's where I'm at right now. I think the fifth book is now, not quite sure, but I need to do a catch up. But the first book is fantastic. and the other ones are also really good. This story follows a witch named. Amelia in Sicily, whose twin sister is brutally murdered. another in a long line of recent killings, in her search to find out the truth and seek vengeance for her sister's death. she delves into the darker forbidden magic unexpectedly summoning and teaming up with one of the princes of hell. Love it. His name's Wrath, wrath Daddy, who has been tasked, to solve the mystery of the murders. It's intriguing, it's sassy, and I think you will really enjoy it. I blew through the first couple books. I loved it. I loved a setting. starts at paranormal. you're pulled into another world at one point. I think kind of on the bounds between paranormal and fantasy. And then on my TBR is a book that was recommended to me by one of my favorite books to grammars tyranny reads. it's called Forged in Blood by Sadie Kincaid. it's a, did you read it? Okay. It's a Why choose Paranormal Romance set in a college setting. I know there's Hidden Magic involved in a Vampire Love interest. I'm not sure if the is a witch per se, but I do believe her bound powers are revealed in the book. I'm a huge fan of Sadie Kincaid. So when she came out with this dark paranormal romance, uh, went to like the top of my TBR. and this is the first book, in a series, in the first two books end on cliffhangers. And the last one apparently is the HEA. so if you pick it up, prepare yourself for a three book Wild Ride. I know I will be, I think I'll be starting this in the next few days. he, he,

So the first that I'm recommending that I have recently read is The Modern Girls Guide to Magic by Lindsay Hall. if you're looking for, that similar second chance cozy vibes, totally your jam, then pick up this book. It's got some magical competition elements, but it's high stakes, but it's all gonna work out in the end, so it's fine. it's set in the uk. It's setting charming cove. and it is so charming. It's like a magical competition to win this garden. And so like she, it's so cool. Just all these different plants, if you like, plants and magic and cute little countryside towns. So much fun. also, I know I've recommended it before, not on this podcast, but I loved the very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sgu Madonna. Also cozy vibes, a little bit more like found family elements. also really good at depicting like those settings and immersing you in the world, which was so cool. they're all more of that like.
